When I taught kindergarten, it was expected that children would be writing and illustrating stories with a beginning, middle, and end. At ages 5 and 6!

With other skills like phonemic awareness and fine motor, this task became easier. But the part of my instruction I had to question was…

Do they even have time to pretend play?

So in TK, before we ask children to write (and in TK it mostly looks like them dictating and us writing with some student-led writing if ready), we do lots of guided pretend play.

Pretend play can lead to creative, motivated storytellers. And once they learn the other skills necessary, those storytellers start sharing through writing!

A sentimental gift for grown ups ⛄️🥹

You’ll need:
- plastic, clear ornaments with removable tops
- white yarn
- black and orange Sharpies
- a cute poem (optional!)

I cut the lengths of yarn to match the height of my students, then they put the yarn inside. They drew the faces on, doing 4 dots for the mouth if they’re 4 years old and 5 dots for the 5 year olds ❤️

I made this poem on @canva! They have such cute premade templates. Hopefully their grown ups love it as much as I do ☺️

I get asked, “What is TK?” enough that I thoug I get asked, “What is TK?” enough that I thought I’d make a reel to explain! This year before kindergarten can look very different, and even be called something very different, depending on where you live. This is how TK is for me here in my medium-sized district in Southern California.

Treasure box but make it about experiences instead Treasure box but make it about experiences instead of stuff ✨

I was struggling to think of a way to recognize when children in our TK class got 10 potty stickers on our chart. This is a huge class goal that we’ve been working on, and I’ve seen so much progress with children being brave in our bathroom and not holding it all day!

I remembered how I used my treasure box in kindergarten when children were recognized for filling a CARES (#responsiveclassroom acronym) card, and I thought I’d recreate some fun experiences for TK!

It’s not the worst thing in the world to give treats or material things for rewards, but I want to be sure I’m giving them something that lasts beyond a few minutes. I also have a class full of kids and that would be way too much candy 😅
