Our cozy spot for self-regulation now includes a f Our cozy spot for self-regulation now includes a feelings chart!

We read the book I Am a Rainbow by Dolly Parton 🥰 which uses colors to describe emotions. Then we made color charts together - this one to hang here and a mini one for each of them to take home.

Now during morning meeting, closing circle, during emotional moments, or to help with peer conflict, we have more ways to describe how we feel. We’ll add more to this area on Friday!

We made scissor salad 🥗to introduce scissors an We made scissor salad 🥗to introduce scissors and glue! It was a no fuss, simple way to practice cutting paper and using a glue stick.

On day 1, we read Scissors on Strike and talked about how to safely use scissors. Each child got a piece of green, red, and yellow paper and a baggie to put them in. Then they cut their lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese into small pieces.

On day 2, we read Glues on Strike and talked about expectations for using glue sticks. Then they took out their salad and glued it to their plate, beginning with their lettuce!

These materials that need special care are now part of our community supply shelf and are available to use!
Year 13 is underway! My second year of TK feels re Year 13 is underway! My second year of TK feels really different from the first, but a lot of things are the same. Including some things I couldn’t have gotten through the first couple of days without:

🔆 Ellie, Gus, and Brownie: I use these buddies in a few ways! Ellie the elephant comes out to learn kids’ names during morning meeting. She loves singing Willaby Wallaby. Gus the dog is our class mascot and is there for anyone needing a cuddle (he’ll do sleepovers with kids starting soon!). Brownie is our little deer who gets passed around circle time so everyone gets a turn to share.

🔆 Soft start: The materials on this shelf are so helpful for starting our day in a fun but calm way. I use small blocks, puzzles, and fine motor activities.

🔆 Our quiet chime: This chime rings when it’s getting too loud in our room. As soon as it rings, we turn our voices off. At the beginning of closing circle, it rings once to remind us to take some deep breaths and get ready to begin.

🔆 Not pictured: YouTube songs and GoNoodle Flow videos! We are finding random 5-10 minute gaps between activities, so a color or shape song works well. We also listen to the Goodbye Song every day at the end of closing circle. Flow videos make our quiet time so calm and meaningful!

Anything you can’t live without at the start of the year??
